Asian
Rural Institute
Asian Rural
Institute or ARI is a training center for rural community
leaders set on a 6 hectare farm in Northern Japan. The focus
of their training program is to create an educational
environment in which these leaders can discover within
themselves and within their people a more desirable image of
community. One of the field personnel of the WAND Foundation
has been trained at ARI and is successful in providing
leadership to transfer much-needed socio-technical knowledge
to rural farmers and to develop our St.
Francis Xavier Local Empowerment Center
the “ARI Way”.
German Doctors for Developing Countries
In 1983, Jesuit Father Bernhard Ehlen
founded the Committee of German Doctors for
Developing Countries. The office of the German Doctors
for Developing Countries is based in Frankfurt am Main. The
Committee of German Doctors for Developing Countries is the
main and valued partner of the WAND Foundation in the
implementation of its water, agroforestry, nutrition and
development initiatives. After the initial support for
the "Buffalo Bank" coming from Knightsbridge International,
the German Doctors provided the bulk of funds for its
expansion in other areas. The German Doctors also provided the
initial funds for the establishment of ecological sanitation
in the barrios, land redemption and the establishment of
seedling nurseries to grow and distribute to farmers seedlings
of ASEAN's most important trees. The activities covered by the
German Doctors support encompass municipalities in the
provinces of Misamis Oriental,
Lanao del Norte and
Zamboanga del Norte. Funding of the German Doctors
supported activities comes from its own coffers and the German
Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development

Broederlijk Delen
The first Lenten campaign was set up in
1961 when the expelled Baluba tribes people were threatened
with starvation in Kasaï, Congo. Cardinal Van Roey made an
appeal to link Lent with a population in need, through
financial support. There was not only hunger in Kasaï; the
Sixties were the decade of decolonisation. In several
countries, the political emancipation involved social and
economic difficulties. Immediately, it became clear that
solidarity work could not be restricted to the former Belgian
colony alone. As the years went by, Broederlijk Delen
broadened its field of action from the Congo to other African
countries and later also to Latin America and Asia.
Panibagong
Paraan

be expanded or replicated are showcased in a competition held
every 2 years in Manila.
In 2003, the LEF won with its water, agroforestry,
nutrition and development (wand) entry. In 2007, a partner of
the LEF (now WAND Foundation), the Lanao Foundation is one of
the Panibagong Paraan sa Puerto Princesa Awardee with its
Muslim-Christian Ecological Sanitation Project.
The Lanao Foundation is headed by the In-House Advisor
of the WAND Foundation, Dr. Elmer V. Sayre.

seed distribution, agroforestry training, and our country
programs, we have empowered rural groups to restore tree cover

helps to preserve traditional livelihoods and cultures for
generations.
